I WTB a ...

This is an area to discuss specific details of your persona. If you have questions about (for instance) what your 13th C Welsh footwear should look like, here's the place to ask.

The idea here is to create topics consisting of a culture and century. Examples: French 14th C, Norse 8th C, Rus 10th C.

I WTB a ...

OK, so I have been around for 10 years and have bounced a persona around from time to time. I feel after all this time it would be way to difficult to change my name from Malcolm to a nice Norse persona. For the past year or 2 I have been playing with a idea around a Scott in the court of King Alfred, in order to let me pull armor, garb, and pretty much everything I wanted from Saxon, Angle, Dane ect. The problem I have been having is one of a last name, as the hearalds tell me " de Bruce" is considered a title. OK, I can live with that. In some net serches I have found I do like the sound of St Clair," Mael Colium St Clere", or various other spellings. The furthest back I found this name is 1066, with William of Normandy. I know it is a name that can go even further back, any ideas?

......And now I can't find the name in the time period I want. Hmmmm, I just love this stuff. How about we all just live wholly in the currant middle ages? Or When in Avacal, dress as an Avacalian? The thought of going into a later period in not to pleasing. Templar???? Blah. To plain.

Hmmm, There have been plenty of "Bruce"s (as surnames) and a few "de Bruce"s registered. Not many but one as recently as 2001 (the 2004 one doesn't count because it's a grandfathered name). I didn't find any precedents disallowing it. But again looking at the documentation that was included with the name submission, it may be too late for you as well.

# Phelan de Bruce

* This name was registered in March of 2001 (via Caid).

(from the Caid LOI) Phelan de Bruce (New name)

The submitter wants a male name and will not allow major changes. If the name must be changed, then he cares most about the sound. The submitter is willing to accept the spelling "de Bruis".

.... Bruce is documented from Withycombe p. 55 de Bruce is found under Bruce, dated to 1274-1329. Also found in Reaney & Wilson p. 69.

This might be a fun game to pass onto the avacal herald's list. It's been way too quiet lately.

As Malcolm's branch herald I would advise him to look at the LoAR on the SCA website for any kind of documentation confirming a general acceptance or denial of the surname 'de Bruce' before proceeding to look for a different surname.

If you are really inclined to change your name I'm living proof that it can be done. I've been playing at this for about 20-21 years and up until about seven(?) years ago I was know as Johannes von Frolichenvald or Johannes Adriaanzoon van Reisbeek if you go back far enough (I have a thing for torturing heralds). But since I was more inclined to wearing T-tunics and Avacal 501's than the 14th and 16th century garb I've thrown myself wholly into the Scandinavian armed tourist thing. It took about two years for the name Grim(olfr) to stick in peoples minds and in the interim I was frequently addressed as not-Johannes. If you can put up with the transition period it's worth it, everyone tells me that Grim is a much better name for me than Johannes was. Which concerns me somewhat since I've always thought I was an entertaining guy with a pleasant personality, oh well. :|
